Rob and Karen Mooney are the new owners at The Waterfront Restaurant. Find out what they have in store …





You and your wife, Karen, are now running The Waterfront Restaurant along Sunset Parade. What kind of dining experience can our readers expect? Our main aim is to go ‘old school’, with a focus on high quality customer service and friendliness. We only use fresh produce and aim to present tasty, high quality food, which is as appealing to the eye as it is to the palate.

What would you say has been the most rewarding part about being a chef and having your own restaurant? It is very satisfying to receive the positive feedback that we do from our customers.  Hearing the ‘wows’ when food is placed in front of them is a real pleasure.

Our aim is to make sure that when you leave our restaurant, we have satisfied every facet of the dining experience.

You have a pretty amazing view, as well as a great space at The Waterfront Restaurant. What you have in store for the restaurant? The views from our balcony overlook the beautiful Hastings River. We have recently installed awnings, so that we can make the most of this area and its spectacular view. Summertime will be a brilliant time to make full use of the alfresco dining; however, we also have floor to ceiling glass windows, so in the colder or wet times, the view can be fully utilised.

The current decor of the restaurant is rustic with a nautical theme, which is different to most new restaurants. It provides great atmosphere, and most people who have been in are impressed by its quirkiness and the fact that it is so different.

What options are available for readers wishing to hold a function at The Waterfront Restaurant? A lot of our previous experience has been in function work. We have this down to a fine art and can cater for any type of function, including weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas parties and work functions. The restaurant is also fully licensed, for the convenience of guests. Currently for numbers of over 40 we are happy to close the restaurant, so that guests can enjoy their function in privacy. We are offering free room hire and for cocktail functions, a special on the food.

We are more than happy to discuss function requirements over the phone, or over a cup of coffee in the restaurant at the client’s convenience.

The food looks absolutely delicious. Tell us about the menu, and will there be seasonal changes? The menu is a combination of meals, which over time we have found to be particular favourites with our customers.

We have a good range of seafood and non-seafood items. Our signature dish is Ocean and Earth, which is a succulent eye fillet with King Prawns and finished with Hollandaise sauce. Our sweet chilli crab and our tender rib eye steak are also proving to be popular choices.  We are currently trying to source more fresh seafood, in order to extend our menu and give more options in seafood.

All our meals are served with potato and fresh vegetables, and currently we are offering a Winter Special of any two courses from our regular menu for $35 per person (some conditions apply). We offer a free celebration cake for groups of 10 or more paying adults dining in the restaurant.

We are also open daily until 11am for breakfast. Come and give us a try.
