Local fashion guru launches styling business to help women rid their wardrobes of unwanted clothes, show them how to wear the clothes they already have and revamp their look to suit their body type. We chat with Vanessa to find out more about The Style Vibe.

Vanessa, tell us a little bit about your professional life and your experience in retail fashion.

My very first job was as a junior Retail Assistant. I absolutely loved the fashion retail industry right from the start and I found so much joy in helping people with their clothing and accessories requirements.

I later went on to become Retail Manager and Store Buyer which gave me valuable skills in fashion styling, fits, brands, business and of course the most important skill – working with people.

During my career, I have also spent time working in finance, business and health and beauty. All of my previous roles have helped me develop a vast skill set of which I am very grateful for. I draw upon all of these skills on a daily basis as I work on my new business venture.

You’ve recently launched The Style Vibe; what is the business about?

I developed The Style Vibe to help people create an individual style that celebrates their best features and helps to build their confidence.

The Style Vibe also offers Event Styling (both personal and commercial), Corporate Styling (perfect for time-poor business people) and a Holiday Packing Service.

I have just started to offer a luxe Wedding Assistance Package as well. This service will help take the pressure and stress out of a bride’s big day by providing styling and selection of the bridal party’s garments and accessories. We’ll also provide personal styling throughout the wedding day and during the professional photo shoot.

How do you go about helping women find their personal style; where do you start?

I am always thrilled when someone reaches out for styling advice. When I first start working with a client, we’ll kick things off with a no-obligation coffee and chat. It’s in this first discussion that I listen to see how The Style Vibe can help someone overcome any struggles they may be experiencing with their image.

The next step on a client’s styling journey, is to arrange a Personal Style Consultation in their home. This includes a wardrobe assessment and or a wardrobe edit and it is this session when we uncover their style category, discuss style goals and begin to curate a stylish wardrobe which includes flattering garments that they feel beautiful in.

When did you discover there was a need for a styling service here in Port Macquarie?

I have always felt that a Personal Styling Service would be an asset to our town. So many times I have heard the same conversations between friends, family and even random people in shops!

The conversation always involves the plea  – “but what do I wear”?

I knew that people were struggling with their fashion choices and as a result they lacked confidence. This affected their self-worth, relationships and the ability to attend and enjoy social situations.

What we wear can play such an important part in helping to build and reflect our individual style and personality. Fashion is a way of making a statement about who we are. It’s a powerful tool that we can use not only to make us feel confident and beautiful but also ensure we project the right image under the right circumstances.

What’s your personal style, and who do you look to for inspiration?

II gain personal inspiration from a wide variety of individuals, brands and locations.

I love Lara Bingle’s effortless style, and I follow a host of style Goddesses and creatives on social media.

I also have a real love for classic beauties such as Bridgett Bardot, Elle Macpherson and the ‘It girl’ of the moment; Megan Markle.

It’s not just about fashion and clothes. What other essentials are there to feeling great in our own skin?

In my opinion, we should aim to be the best versions of our true self. This means we need to look after ourselves first before we look after anyone else.

By constantly prioritising ourselves behind children, work or personal relationships we devalue ourselves. This creates a ‘knock-on effect’ in our health and wellbeing.

It is vital to give ourselves permission to invest in the things that make us happy and feel good. This may be a hobby, yoga, travel or even investing in your personal style. Every one of us are beautiful and unique. We need to back ourselves and say, “I am worth it!”

When it comes to shopping for new clothes, what are your tips for us every day gals?

Try everything on!! I understand it takes time and a lot of us don’t have time due to work and family commitments, however I feel it is really essential.

Shop local and ask the retailers for help. They are the experts and have a great deal of knowledge in the sizing and fits of the brands they sell. Before a purchase, ask yourself;  will I wear it all the time, how many different outfits can I create by purchasing this item, is it comfortable, does it fit well, will the fabric wash / wear well?
