The Big Dig

It’s on again! One of Port Macquarie’s favourite family events, The Big Dig will take place on Town beach on 15th May. Ivana Agapiou tells us this year will be the biggest dig ever! And what’s even better … every child who participates wins a prize!

What’s the history behind the “Big Dig” event in Port Macquarie?

The Big Dig, Port Macquarie commenced 2011 through Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise, with the intent of bringing a fun “family event” to town – one adults and kids alike would enjoy. At the same time, we’re capturing our natural beauty on one of our iconic beaches, Town Beach!

What’s new at this year’s Big Dig event?

Many more pre-dig activities that will add fun and excitement. The three big mascots, Big Dog, Ditto and Healthy Harold will be there, along with loads more extra adult Big Dig prizes (this last and huge dig was a sell-out last year), big prizes for everyone who purchases a ticket – prizes such as a Macquarie Waters Bed and Breakfast, or a new whipper snipper – all prizes are well over the value of the ticket! That is our guarantee.

When and where will the dig be held this year?

Sunday 15th May – tickets start selling on Town Beach at 9am for an 11am start for official digs. However, once Big Dog, Healthy Harold and Ditto arrive and dig to retrieve their prize – we perform the ceremonial dunking of the Mayor and Councillors – and for only $2 you can be the one who achieves this!

Once this royal and traditional ceremony is over, it is almost time for the digs, which start with the ages 0 – 3 years (yes, Mum or Dad can help them.)

Please explain in more detail how the action unfolds at the Big Dig … Is it true that every child wins a prize?

True, true, true – yes, yes, yes. Everyone who buys a ticket wins! All the adults who purchase a $30 ticket also win …

One savvy mother last year turned the event into her 7 year old’s birthday party: “What a fantastic day this was for all my son’s friends. No one can beat this much entertainment for such a small price tag!”

What age categories will be open on the day for entrants?

All ages are catered for.

How much does entry to the event cost, and what does this entry fee cover?

Just $5 for kids and $30 for the adult big dig. Most of the other activities are FREE.

Where will funds raised on the day go?

Tacking Point Light House restoration project, BraveHearts, Life Education and the Mera School in Nepal – we reached $6K last year, and this year we are aiming for $8K …

Who would you like to thank for their contributions to the event this year?

The Rotary Club of Sunrise members are awesome volunteers and donors … plus, the following great sponsor businesses are: Green Meadows Heath Centre, Northcorp Accountants, BIG W, Coast Front Realty, Lasting Results & Hypotherapy, Debbie Marks Podiatry, TAG Auto, Salt Water Wine and Port Macquarie X-Ray.

Plus, tons of generous local businesses that have donated prizes. We Love Port Macquarie small business.
