Mystery Winery Tour, Mini-railway Family Fun Day, Purple People Market Day, Greyhound and Horse Race Days – the 34th Annual Wauchope Lasiandra Festival has something for all the family! Celebrated every March, the festival sees Wauchope come alive to celebrate its floral emblem, the Lasiandra. Beautiful specimens are dotted around the town and surrounds in full bloom over the month of March. Festival Secretary Chrissy Jones told us just what is in store for festival goers in 2018.
The festival continues to evolve, incorporating new events and other community organisations. After the success of the Mystery Winery Tour in 2017, it’s back on again in 2018, on Sunday 18th March. If readers are wanting to join us for a fun day touring some local wineries for tastings and a BBQ lunch, they need to book a seat asap. Cost is $50 per person. The contact details for bookings are Chrissy on 0412 137 621 or Sheryl on 6586 0050.
The festival wouldn’t be the same without Purple People Shopping and Market Day. It is a very popular day for business houses, market stall holders and shoppers alike. The town comes alive in a sea of purple. Our committee encourage business houses to get into the swing of things by decorating their window fronts, premises and by their staff dressing up. There have been some fantastic costumes over the years; I am really looking forward to it! Mark it down in your diary – Thursday, March 8!
Prizes are awarded for the Best Shop Window Fronts, Best Premises Display, Best Staff Costumes and there is a Grand Champion trophy for the Best Overall Effort. Purple People Shopping and Market Day will be held on Thursday 8th March from 8:30am ’til 5pm. There will be market stalls on the sidewalk and Purple People Day specials from participating businesses. Any market stall enquiries should be directed to Secretary Chrissy on 0412 137 621. Sites are limited, so it’s first in best dressed, and stalls must be booked prior to the day.
On Saturday 10th March, the Hastings Valley Miniature Railway Club will hold a “Family Fun Day” at Yippin Creek Reserve. Young and old can ride the mini-rail for just $2. There are a couple of rules to ride; you must wear covered shoes and a smile! Wauchope Lions Club will be holding a sausage sizzle, or bring along a picnic lunch.
There are golf and bowls days at Wauchope Country Club and Jazz in the Vineyards at Bago Winery. Saturday 17th from 1pm is the 34th running of the Lasiandra Cup by the Hastings River Greyhound Club at the Beechwood Road track and Easter Monday, April 2nd, will see the staging of Wauchope Jockey Club’s 34th Annual Lasiandra Trophy Race Day. There will be prizes awarded for the best purple dressed at the track.
Saturday 24th March will see the purple parkrun at Rocks Ferry Reserve, Rocks Ferry Road. For further details, contact Wauchope parkrun via email: email@example.com
The Lasiandra Committee will host the Festival Awards Presentation in Lasiandra Park on Sunday, March 25 from noon.
I would like to thank my small, hardworking committee; there are only eight of us in total: Sam Elphick / President, James Wallis / Treasurer, Chrissy Jones / Secretary and General Committee members Sheryl Barnett, Heather McPhail, Des Egan, Chuck Murray and Life Member Stuart Weir. Without their individual efforts, the festival simply would not go ahead. Also, I thank all our festival sponsors and supporters; there are many. Check out the website for the full list of sponsors. Plus, I would like to thank whole heartedly both the business houses and community of Wauchope and surrounds. The continued support from all is appreciated.
