FOCUS catches up with the owner’s of Port’s newest venue afloat is ready for your next function! San Michelle

Tell us a bit about the boat’s history.

The San Michelle was designed and built in Queensland by master boat builder, Clem Masters, in 1967.

She has plied the waters of Queensland as far north as the Gulf of Carpentaria, where she spent her early years as a ‘working boat’ harvesting crayfish and Coral Trout from the abundant waters of the north.

After her work there was done, San Michelle was taken to Brisbane, where she was fully restored to her classic beginnings with polished chrome and stainless steel and beautiful cedar complementing her solid spotted gum construction.

She worked on the Brisbane River for many years as a function boat and wedding chauffeur service, hosting many parties, weddings, cruises etc. and was well known and loved.

In 2009 she was taken to Townsville, where she was to be put to work once again; this time, her skipper’s dream was to teach seamanship to the people of Palm Island. Unfortunately, due to ill health that dream was never realised, and it’s here that we discovered her and brought her to Port Macquarie, where the next phase of her ‘life’ has begun.

You have just refurbished her; what’s new?

In a labour of love, we have spent the last year scraping and sanding, painting and polishing to bring the San Michelle back to a condition befitting such a lovely old vessel.

All of her timberwork has been restored and her galley and bar have been refurbished, adding even more class and character.

What facilities do you have on board?

The San Michelle has a large commercial galley, including quality crockery, cutlery and drinkware, which enables us to prepare and serve food for your guests onboard – ensuring freshness and quality in taste and presentation. The refurbished cocktail bar is centrally located and is both funky and functional! Our newly installed sound system delivers perfect sound in all areas of the boat, including the spacious front deck area and is iPod/mp3 and laptop compatible.

Add to the atmosphere with our laser party lights and disco ball! TV and broadband is available for corporate functions, meetings or team building days. We have added all-weather clear covers to the entertainment area, which means a comfortable cruise whatever the weather!

We have installed new, comfortable, full size toilet facilities on the entertainment deck level, which means no steps or ladders when answering a call of nature!

There are some unique ideas for functions and charters. What are they?

Through San Michelle Charters, we are really excited about being able to bring something a little different to the cruise boat scene in town.

Rather than offering regular cruises, we would like to promote the San Michelle as Port Macquarie’s most boutique venue – bringing a creative and fun ‘twist’ to your next function. We will be offering everything from elegant dinner parties for eight with your own personal chef and waiter to our ‘Priscilla Queen of the River’ hen’s night (naughty and nice), sweet 16s, pirate parties, Tapas at Twilight; we can even cater for small weddings! And for that first Tuesday in November, what about ‘Cocktails, Canapes and the Cup’?

We would also like to offer the San Michelle as the perfect location for wedding or family photography.

We have already launched our cooking classes on the water, or ‘Tastings on the Hastings’, as we have referred to them! We’ll be expanding on this unique concept in the coming months, so visit our website or join our Facebook group to get the inside information on upcoming events!

Of course, the San Michelle is the perfect venue for your Christmas party, so book soon!

We would also like to commit to at least 3 charity events per year with our first already held recently, when we donated our first ‘Tastings on the Hastings’ cooking cruise to the Women’s and Children’s Refuge.

What makes San Michelle different to other function or charter boats?

The San Michelle offers the traditional style, elegance and romance of a bygone era.

San Michelle Charters offers imagination, creativity and enthusiasm, because your pleasure is ‘Our Pleasure’.

Thanks Sue.
