Relive the era of Elvis and join in the excitement with Port’s newest festival … two days of Rock ‘n’ Roll on 12 and 13 October. Mark Bowden from Juke Box Jive and Panthers Entertainment Co-ordinator Scott Mesiti (pictured right) shares the fun about the event …
Rock Around The Clock is the newest festival to hit Port Macquarie’s events calendar! Can you tell us a little bit about the event?
Absolutely! Rock Around The Clock is a celebration of ‘50s and ‘60s Rock ‘n’ Roll music, held at Port Macquarie Panthers this October 12 and 13. The event will have two nights of live Rock ‘n’ Roll music, which will make it worthwhile for out of towners to come and enjoy. Sails Resort are our accommodation partner and have offered some great accommodation.
Where did the idea for such a festival develop?
We have been thinking about doing something for a while, as we have a strong Rock ‘n’ Roll community here in Port Macquarie who often support the club.
What is the Rock Around The Clock’s line up looking like?
We have Sydney rockers Juke Box Jive and The Pink Chevys performing Saturday 13, with No Brakes and Gold Coast outfit The John Skye Band opening the event on Friday 12. Special guest DJ Bob Bacurin will entertain both nights.
What can Rock ‘n’ Roll enthusiasts expect from the two day festival?
Lots of good tunes, Rock ‘n’ Roll dancing, dressing in the swinging ‘60s and an overall great time. There will also be a workshop held on Saturday where anyone can come down and learn about the ever popular Swing dancing.
This must be an exciting time for the local Rock ‘n’ Roll clubs! Can you tell us how they have been and will be involved in the festival?
In a sense, it’s the local Rock ‘n’ Roll clubs’ event. They have been instrumental in planning the format of the event, provided ideas for booking entertainment and used their widespread contacts market the event. The event would be impossible without their involvement.
Mark Bowden from Juke Box Jive: tell us about your music and your career history?
Juke Box Jive is currently celebrating 25 years within the music industry and has managed to keep the same style both in music and costume ’til this day. Primarily performing the hits from the ‘50s and ‘60s, Juke Box Jive are also used at private events, presenting a great mix of general dance music to satisfy a varied range of tastes.
Mark Bowden is the lead singer and founder of Juke Box Jive and says that his inspiration during the early years of the band forming were none other than Australian group, The DELTONES. Mark has a great love for doo-wop style vocal harmonies and believes that each performance should be energy filled and exciting, both visually and audibly. Mark is also a cabaret performer and was responsible for creating the Neil Sedaka and Barry Manilow shows, which have now been working successfully for the past 7 years. These shows consist of a 13 piece musician team, which include Las Vegas style dancers.
Have you or the band members been to Port Macquarie before?
Yes, we have performed at Port Macquarie approximately 6 years ago, and it was for the Port Macquarie Rock ‘n’ Roll Festival and also at Panthers. We all agree that the atmosphere at Port is a very relaxed, clean and tidy, friendly environment. We are excited we have been given the chance to return.
What are you looking forward to most about visiting the picturesque Mid North Coast?
Just getting away from the hustle and bustle of Sydney, taking in what we hope will be fantastic weather and enjoying the sights. This will also give us the opportunity to catch up with friends who are also up for the event.
A festival like Rock Around The Clock must be such fun for you! Will you get to enjoy it while you’re not preforming?
Definitely. It is such a relaxed atmosphere, as mentioned earlier. We are considering taking the opportunity of coming to Port on the Friday, to allow us a little time to look around and also enjoy a dance with the Friday night entertainment.
What is the best thing about Rock ‘n’ Roll, in your opinion?
As the majority of Rock ‘n’ Roll lovers are anywhere between 40 and 60 and occasionally some younger rockers as well, it is such a pleasure to perform to respectful, fun loving, sensible audiences. A high percentage have retired and have made Rock ‘n’ Roll dancing a large part of their social life, meeting new friends and visiting different venues. Others use Rock ‘n’ Roll as a form of exercise and a great way to let loose at the end of a hard week of work.
Rock ‘n’ Roll is great way to share a fun night out with your partner and to listen and enjoy those fabulous hits of a fantastic era gone by.
