Meet Peter Woodhouse, who passionately dedicates all his time to being a volunteer at Mid Coast Care.
Full name: Peter Woodhouse.
Time spent living in Port Macquarie: We moved here in July 2003 from Millthorpe, near Orange in the Central West.
Job title: Bargain Centre Manager in charge of overseeing the volunteers, the shop and café.
I have been volunteering … at Mid Coast Care for just over 5 years.
The best part about my job is … meeting and helping people, and I like to keep myself busy.
I decided to begin volunteering … because of my age I found it hard to get a job. I started doing volunteer work as part of my Newstart payment.
My role at Mid Coast Care is … looking after the volunteers, such as organising inductions, work rosters, picking up donated goods and deliveries.
On the administration side I do all the accounts, banking and liaising with the bookkeeper.
I also communicate with the 11 organisations that refer clients to us, such as Hastings Women and Children’s Refuge, Dads in Distress, Churches, Burnside and the Neighbourhood Centre, to name a few.
I am most passionate about … my job, my wife and my daughter.
My favourite thing about volunteering is …
I get to meet a wide variety of people and also helping the clients from the Women’s Refuge, whom we supply furniture and household goods to free of charge.
My hobbies outside of the workday are … fishing, playing around with computers and driving around the countryside sightseeing.
The greatest lessons I’ve learned are … that being at Mid Coast Care is very rewarding work and working the long hours (45 to 50 hrs) a week are extremely pleasurable.
In the future I want to … see Mid Coast Care grow even bigger and just occasionally have a holiday.
Thank you Peter.
