FOCUS sent out the call to find the face of the Port Cup 2018, and we’d like to introduce you to our winner, Lana Jones from Wauchope. Not just a pretty face and fashionista, but a dedicated community member and mother, Lana tells us about her family life, passions and what it’s like to be the face of this year’s Port Cup …

Lana, how long have you lived in the local area?

I have lived in the Hastings area pretty much my whole life. I was raised on a horse stud in upper Rollands Plains.

Can you tell us about your work and family life?

I am currently in the final weeks of maternity leave from my bookkeeping/ administration position at Werin Medical Clinic. I’m currently residing in Wauchope with my partner, Tom, and two beautiful babies, Lane (4 years) and Grace (7 months).

You’re the founder of the GGS little stars; can you share that story with us?

Back in 2015, Tom and I lost our two year old daughter, Georgia Grace (GG), to a horrific accident on Tom’s family farm. I always remembered watching the news on driveway deaths when I was younger and asking myself time and time again how that could possibly happen. The harsh reality is that it does happen. I was all but a helicopter parent with GG, and all it took was literally two seconds.

A year after her death, the family sat down and were reflecting on the what ifs and whys, and we all came up with an idea. How were we going to prevent this from happening to any other family and save them from the trauma and loss we had to go through? So, we created the “Check before you drive, to keep your kids alive” campaign. The little pink star for GG is a last minute reminder to double check your mirrors,to see if your kids are buckled in properly, or just yell out to get the all clear.

We didn’t expect the response that we have had and are blessed to live in such an amazing community.

MNS Print in wauchope have been amazing with ordering the stars, and we are so grateful to all of the local businesses for being distributors.

As a mum and role model, what do you hope to show your children?

I want my kids to always live life to the fullest, go everywhere, see everything, not to be scared to try something new and to not to live a sheltered life. I want them to appreciate the little things and always find the light in the darkest of situations. Be humble, respectful and never stop learning. Just love to live!

You’ve been involved with local events such as the Wauchope Showgirls and Wauchope Race Day – can you fill us in on those details?

I don’t mind a good excuse to frock up and if it’s a community event – even better! Back in 2009 I competed in the Wauchope Showgirl competition and not only had a ball with some top local girls, but was lucky enough to take out the title. I just love the races, though. The whole atmosphere, the buzz – it’s just awesome.

Local racing is the best; everyone is there for a good time. My favourites in the area are the Whoop Whoop Cup, Lasiandra Cup and of course, the Port Cup. You can either get dressed completely to the nines and over the top, or head out in pluggers and a sundress, and you don’t feel out of place.

Why did you decide the enter the Face of the Cup Competition?

I wanted to show all of the mid life mammas out there that you can do anything you put your mind to. You don’t have to be a size 6 runway model to rock a great outfit. Words I try to live by are always wear your best accessory – your smile.

Did you expect to win, and how did you feel once you did?

Definitely not! To tell the truth, my anxiety almost made me pull out as we were driving in to the competition. I was just happy to get a night off and have an excuse to get dressed up and go out – you know, every mamma’s wish ha ha! You could imagine how I felt … ecstatic and shocked, to say the least.

How was the experience of being our front cover model?

It was definitely something I have never done before. I was well and truly out of my usual comfort zone, but loved every minute of it!

You’ll be representing the Fashions on the Field for us at the Port Cup – what are you looking forward to most about the Cup day?

I’m so excited to get all dressed up and to see all of the amazing outfits! Pretty keen to hang out in the FOCUS tent and have a vino with the gals and hopefully back a winner!

Thanks Lana.
