Idyllic Beachside Living

Found in the tranquil beachside precinct of Catarina Estate, the June FOCUS Home of the Month is a grand design showcasing meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Chrissy Jones had the pleasure of being shown through the executive residence by owner Belinda.

The two storey home is a standout in the tranquil estate; it is a home that fits perfectly into both its landscape and the young family’s busy lifestyle.

The exterior is framed by a striking white powder coated aluminium picket fence, beautifully crafted by Port Balustrades & Pool Fencing, adding an old world charm that blends well with the modern facade. It is a striking mix of James Hardie Sycon horizontal wall cladding, stacker stone tile and rendered brickwork, softened by landscaped garden beds and topiaries.

The grand residence comprises two levels of spacious living areas, connected internally by a gorgeous hardwood staircase, painted white and then sanded to give a whitewash effect.

Entry is via an exposed aggregate driveway that leads to both the covered entrance portico and garage. A custom made solid timber entrance door, that is framed by glass panels, opens into the foyer.  Champagne Oak vinyl planks are the flooring of choice underfoot throughout the home. Inspired by European Oak, these distressed planks feature unique grain details and are finished with a lightly brushed surface texture. Right of entry, tucked away behind a set of three custom made timber and glass sliding doors, is the media room. Luxuriously furnished, the media room is a private space to sit back, relax and watch the big screen.

To the left in the foyer is a set of sliding glass doors, from Mid Coast Windows, that open on to the outdoor entertaining area and lead you into the home to the open plan kitchen, dining and lounge, guest powder room, laundry, staircase down to the double garage and staircase leading to the upper level.

A truly magnificent kitchen has been supplied and installed by Mid Coast Kitchens. “Cloud Burst” Caesarstone bench-tops, a Smeg induction cook-top and oven, a pressed metal tile splash back from Colortile Tiles With Style, an integrated dishwasher placed in the large island bench, plus an expanse of overhead and under bench solid front and glass panelled cabinetry, provides a huge amount of storage for the home cook.

Neatly concealed behind a wooden sliding cavity door is the butler’s pantry. The custom-built  U-shaped bench-top has plenty of space for food preparation and appliances; shelving nooks above and below provide a spot for condiments, cooking implements and the like.

The open plan kitchen, dining and lounge rooms all combine seamlessly to create a wonderful space to relax with family and entertain friends. Opening out from the lounge is the outdoor alfresco entertaining area. This is a fantastic part of the home design and one that suits the family to a tee.  Comprising three relax zones, to say this outdoor area is special would be an understatement.  Merbau timber encases and wraps around the exterior of the home underfoot, frameless glass balustrade sections the pool area and non-slip tiling in the outdoor kitchen area adds to the mix of textures. Step down to the fire pit, that is surrounded by Merbau timber seating, enter the tranquil pool area, or sit back and take in the ocean views from the outdoor kitchen/dining alfresco – three simply perfect relax zones.

Ascend the beautifully crafted stairway to the second level landing; further Champagne Oak vinyl planks are underfoot and lead you left to the family bedrooms and right to the guest accommodation and master suite. Three mirror-image bedrooms are all carpeted, each has a ceiling fan and downlights and are fitted out with roller blinds from Apollo Blinds Port Macquarie.  The family bedrooms are all very comfortable, having built-in glass fronted double wardrobes, and two have balconies. The bedrooms are serviced by a roomy family bathroom comprising an oval freestanding bath placed under an opaque glass window, wall hung double vanity with in-bench hand basins, under bench storage drawers and a wide vanity mirror.  A glass screened corner shower, grey floor tile and white floor to ceiling wall tiles all add up to a sleek, easy clean family bathroom.

The guest bedroom that doubles as a sitting room has its own private balcony on two sides.  White aluminium balustrade provides a safety element, but also adds a touch of class to the balcony, that is visually pleasing both inside and out. Completing the second level is the exquisite master suite. Luxurious, the master is spacious, also has its own private balcony, plus a louvred glass panel vertical window that allows for the magnificent ocean views and adjustment of cooling sea-breezes. A walk-around his/her robe is placed behind a dividing wall and has an abundance of hanging and shelving space. Custom-built cabinetry from Mid Coast Kitchens, comprising a set of five drawers and mirror is placed either side of the robe.

Adding to the luxury of the master is the adjoining en-suite. His/her double glass fronted shower with stainless steel rain showers and two wall recesses are complemented beautifully by the Artisan range floor tile. White floor to ceiling tiling and a wall hung his/her vanity with round above bench hand basins and mirror above complete the en-suite.

Overall, the home is a wonderful design by Collins W Collins, built with exacting precision by Portside Projects. It is suited to the family that calls it home and is both a private oasis and a comfortable, inviting space to entertain family and friends.

From the Owner, Belinda Hodson.

You chose Anthony Awad to construct your new home. How has it been working with Anthony and his team?

It has been so much fun, and I say that wholeheartedly. We were so fortunate to have such a competent builder to work with. Anthony and his team were always so relaxed and understanding every step of the way; he made the process so easy and fun, as I said.

Would you recommend Anthony to prospective home builders?

Absolutely! If we were to do it all again, Anthony and his team at Portside Projects would be my first pick, 100 per cent.

What were the first steps when you began your new home journey?

We purchased the block from the developer of Catarina after he shared his thoughts and future plans for the area over a cup of coffee.

We knew after speaking with him that this is the place we want to bring up our young family.

We then engaged with James Collins to bring to life our ideas and our vision for our forever home. From there, we met Anthony and before we knew it, we were turning dirt and building our home.

Did you have any particular desires when you first approached Anthony in relation to the building? If so, what were they, and how were these met?

I had a very good idea of what I wanted in my mind and when I first spoke to him about it, he could see where I was wanting to go with the build and was very accommodating of that.

My desire to paint the whole house white took a bit of convincing with both him and my husband … ha ha … but they both trusted my vision (I think) and by the end of it they were both very happy with the result; I know I definitely am!

What is your favourite part of your home?

It’s hard to pick one, to be honest … inside I absolutely love my kitchen; it’s amazing. It was one part of the house that I was so clear in my mind about how I wanted it to look, but it did take a lot of time making selections to get it exactly how I wanted. Steve and Trudy did a wonderful job of delivering that.

Outside, I can’t go past our summer/winter zone, with our pool meeting our fire pit with only glass separating the two. Our family loves being outdoors, and it’s nice to have an area that accommodates all seasons.

How does the home suit your lifestyle?

Both myself and my husband live very busy lifestyles between both of us working and bringing up our three wonderful children. We love entertaining, so our outdoor entertaining area gets a lot of use most weekends with family and friends.

We were very mindful when designing our house to have an area big enough outdoors for our kids to play happily and safely, as they are still young and need that outdoor space. The front courtyard below our entertaining area always has kids playing games or kicking the footy around.

Obviously, our house being only a stone’s throw away from the beach is bliss. We are there most days, and our dog has also become accustomed to the beach lifestyle.
