Wind back the clock to the nineties and early “naughties”, and guaranteed if you have ever hit the club/pub circuit in Port Macquarie, then you would have come across the famous (sometimes infamous) Dave & Gerry.
These two entertainers have long impressed crowds with their parties, karaoke and trivia nights; and now with Dave’s new boat, The Port Adventure in town, the dynamic duo are taking their shows to the seas and bringing with them some of Sydney’s best entertainers. Dave and Gerry tell us all about the reunion …
Dave: for those who don’t know you and your history with Port Macquarie, can you fill them in?
I moved to Port Macquarie in 1998 and moved back to Sydney in 2006.
When I first arrived in Port Macquarie, my company, Wizbang Entertainment, provided entertainment and promotion concepts for many pubs and clubs, from Taree to Nambucca Heads.
When I met Gerry, he was the entertainment manager of Port RSL and together, we just “clicked” – firstly as mates with our old football contacts, and then as an entertainment duo.
We worked together, here in Port, for 11 years and I, for some “silly reason” decided to move back to Sydney and start up a Sydney Harbour based charter boat operation.
Gerry: you are well known around town for your entertainment – give us the scoop on what you have been up to lately.
Since Dave went back to Sydney, I have continued to do trivia quizzes, karaoke and “Aussie Bingo” at different venues around the Mid North Coast every week. I also do private functions – like birthdays, and recently appeared as Elvis at the wedding at Cassegrain’s.
Dave: when did the “Dave & Gerry” gigs first start, and what were you best known for?
Our strength together has always been our ability to “read” a crowd and have a “crack” at anything.
We provided entertainment as game show hosts and also provided very entertaining karaoke shows, where we would dress the singers up with various props including wigs, plastic guitars and just make the whole thing fun.
We also staged the footy show “unplugged” with Fatty, Blocker and the gang doing a live show at the RSL Club twice, which was very successful, with a sold out auditorium.
Many venues booked us as professional comperes, and once we even got the gig working for NBN for a telethon and when they crossed to Port Macquarie from Newcastle, we were the comperes, along with Paul “the chief” Harragon.
Gerry: it sure seems like you guys know how to have a good time! Tell us about your upcoming party cruises.
We will take advantage of Dave’s association with some of the great acts he has on his Sydney cruise boat and from time to time bring them to Port Macquarie. We had a load of Christmas parties in December and plan to offer a venue for functions, weddings, parties – anything!
We’ll also be “getting the band back together”, with Dave and I hosting party mega mix retro parties. Anyone who remembers how the Macquarie Hotel used to rock will be in for some more of the same!
Dave: other than the party cruises, you have some amazing talent lined up for tribute nights. Tell us what you have planned for the first part of 2019.
We have just commenced our dolphin spotting and sunset cruises, and the feedback we have had from customers is sensational. Our vessel has plenty of indoor and outdoor spaces, comfortable lounge chairs, and the dolphins are the main act and seem to love surfing on our bow.
Already we have introduced Port Macquarie locals and tourists to our ABBA and Beatles tribute shows. These acts work regularly on my vessel on Sydney Harbour, and we are also going to introduce a lot of these acts on to the Hastings River on our boat.
Keep in touch and ensure you book early for Bob Downe. He is sensational.
Dave: this is not you first foray into boating. What do you love most about this business, and what do you hope it will do for our local area?
So true. When I first moved to Port Macquarie, the last thing I ever thought I would do was own a boat. Gerry and I used to work on the Port Venture and provide music for our Party Megamix shows, and then one day we purchased the Chinese Junk and turned it into a tourist operation, as before the previous owner only used it for private parties. Then for some reason, I bought the Port Venture and took it out of town and used it in Sydney.
Here I am, 15 years later with another boat and ready to fill the void, as since the Port Venture left, the Port Macquarie region has not had a beautiful, big, luxury boat.
Together with Gerry, and while we are both 15 yers older, we still know how to have a good time – and our mission statement is to ensure that everyone who comes on board is welcome and has a good experience with us.
What we do is not rocket science; we just want to provide a water based venue for everyone to enjoy.
Gerry: what’s your fave song to sing?
Crazy Little Thing Called Love!
Favourite album: Best of Van Morrison.
What do you love about Port?
I love to travel and no matter where I go or where I’ve been, I have never found anywhere else in the world I would rather live.
I like going on holidays, because when it is over, I love coming home to Port!
