Luxe Café proudly won Port’s most esteemed award – the 2009 Business of the Year. Life’s been pretty busy since then & Chris tells us more about what’s good at LUXE.
> Luxe recently won not only the Café Award, but took home the Business of the Year award. How has work life been since then?
It has been very busy since winning the awards, which is fantastic. Coming into the party season, Leasa and I have been trying to keep up with quoting for functions – Christmas parties, weddings etc. The good thing about the awards is the awareness of Luxe by locals that have not tried us before. It is great to see new faces coming into the café to see what we are about. Winning these awards is definitely making our work more fun, but we already enjoy what we do, so work life hasn’t changed too much.
Although winning these awards is very humbling, there is always room for improvement. So there is always more work to do.
> What is new on the menu at Luxe?
We have been running a new menu for about 2 months now, which has dishes such as Thai Prawn Laska, Beef burger with beetroot relish, Prosciutto and Sage Carbonara pasta, and our apprentices, Logan and Cale have been coming up with some great specials which change daily and include Chicken Sang Choy Bow, a Gourmet Steak Sandwich, Atlantic Salmon and Asparagus gnocchi … just to name a few.
We are also in the process of changing our catering menu to include Noodle Boxes for our canapé functions, as these have been a hit with clients in the last few months.
> What local products and suppliers do you use in your business, and why is this important to Luxe?
We use organic home farmed eggs, which have been a huge benefit for us over the past 5 years. The yolks glow at Luxe. We use a lot of local suppliers, such as Kenny Little Fruit and Vege, Fusion Food Services, Balmoor Distributors Pye Provedores, Mooney’s Seafood and Organics, Colonial Meats and Hot Graphics.
It is hugely important to our business that we have these suppliers as our network and friends. All these businesses have contributed to the success of Luxe, and Leasa and I are very thankful for their support.
> What will locals love about Luxe?
For locals who have not tried us yet, you must come in and try our coffee, homemade sweets and breakfast and lunch that is cooked by Chefs in an open style kitchen, so you can watch your food being cooked.
We think locals will also enjoy the catering, as we personalise every function for our clients’ needs. The vibe at Luxe is also something you will love. Casual, relaxed and friendly.
> What keeps you passionate about what you do?
There is a lot of sub standard fast food and service in the market today. We at Luxe feel food should stay the same as it was. Fresh from the farm to the plate. No added chemicals etc. That is enough to keep anybody passionate. It is in my blood, I have been around food all my life, it is a part of what I do.
> You also do catering for functions?
Catering has become a big part of our business over the past 12 months. We do a lot of business catering for lunches, meetings and openings and we are now also specialising in weddings, as receptions are now becoming more popular at private houses and venues.
> Tell us about your team.
Our staff and family are the backbone of our busines; they are awesome! Leasa and I believe we are very fortunate to have support from these people. We are very close and believe working as a team is very important to achieve what we have set out to do. We thank them and take this opportunity to say, “The beers are on us!”
> Thank you Chris.
