Focus was pleased to partner with Settlement City and Rydges for the local modelling competition held in April. Local student Brooke Durrant was judged the winner. Her prize package included a photoshoot in Sydney to help launch her career.
> Congratulations on winning the Settlement City Model Competition. You looked very surprised – you didn’t expect it?
Thank you. Well, just getting into the finals was an incredible achievement. There were so many beautiful girls; I thought I had no hope. But when they called my name … WOW! It was just so amazing, I couldn’t believe it. It was just such a shock!
> Was this the first competition you entered, and have you modelled previously?
Yes, it was actually the first. When I saw the advertisements for the competition, I thought that it would be such a great experience just to learn all the basics. Which it was! And so I entered having no idea what was in store.
I haven’t actually done professional modelling before but have always taken photos all done up with friends in front of the good old bathroom mirror!
> Part of your prize was a trip to Sydney. What did that involve?
I had to be awake at 4:50 am to be able to get to Sydney at noon. We left the house at 5am, and were on our way. When I was down in Sydney, I met up with Luke and Colleen.
At their house they put a base of make-up on me, showed me the outfits I would be modelling in and then did my hair. Then we all went down to one of Sydney’s parks in Vaucluse.
I started down on the beach in this beautiful dress among the rocks, and then quickly changed into this real Kate Moss outfit. We went up to this gorgeous house, and I got changed into another outfit, which was this stunning turquoise dress and cute purple heels. After that there was an awesome biker outfit, with a big black jacket. Next up I was photographed against a column in a coral singlet and pendant.
After that we went down to a bridge and I wore this absolutely stunning black, classic dress. It was probably my favourite shot, although they were all so great. I finished up in one of my own dresses against all this greenery. By this time it was quite cold, but I managed!
Then we went back to Colleen’s and picked up all my clothes and went to Rydges for the next couple of nights. That day had to be the best day of my life!
> How has this inspired you?
This whole experience has inspired me in more ways than one. Not only do I want to do more modelling, I now never want to stop doing it. This whole experience has given me a little taste of what modelling will be like, and I loved every single moment of it. I definitely want to do it for a living!
> Who do you look up to as a role model and why?
The person who I look up to would most probably be Alice Burdeu. She won the Australian next top model in 2007 and was not only fair skinned, but also had the same colour hair as me. Now she is a famous model. She has given me so much inspiration, and I would love to be like her!
> What advice would you have for other girls who would like to get into modelling?
If there are any other girls who want to get into modelling, then all I need to say is just follow your dreams. Don’t listen to anyone else … just do what you want to do. Don’t let people put you down, and don’t give in to peer pressure.
It is your dream, your life, not anyone else’s. Even if it’s not modelling you want to do but it’s something else, don’t worry about anyone else – just do what makes you feel good about yourself.
> What other hobbies/sports do you get involved in?
My hobby, apart from taking photos 24/7, would be dancing. I dance once a week at La Vive Classique, and it is loads of fun. I have met so many great people and some who will be famous some day.
I also just like to go out with my friends and have fun at sleepovers watching scary movies! I used to play netball but have given that up, because I want to do more modelling.
> Any last things you would like to add?
I would also just like to thank Luke and Colleen again for this absolutely amazing experience that I will never forget, and I would love to thank Rydges, Settlement City, Focus and Cueneo Productions for this amazing experience.
> Thank you Brooke.
